Ep. 159 | Breaking Through Your #1 Limitation - Limiting Beliefs & Your Identity
Breaking Through Your #1 Limitation: Limiting Beliefs & Your Identity
The biggest obstacle in your life isn’t outside of you—it’s what you believe about yourself. In Episode 159 of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface expose the root of most people’s limitations: false identity and limiting beliefs.
This episode is a wake-up call for men who feel stuck, frustrated, or incapable of breakthrough. If you want to transform your mindset, your actions, and your future—it starts with what you believe.
The Real Problem: A False Identity
You don’t behave in a vacuum. Every action is tied to a belief. And every belief is rooted in your identity—who you think you are.
“You don’t rise above your identity. You live from it.”
—Garrett Unclebach
If you believe you’re broken, a failure, or not enough—you’ll make decisions that confirm that belief, even when it’s not true.
What Are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are lies you believe about yourself, others, or God that restrict how you think, lead, and live.
Examples include:
“I’m not the kind of man who finishes.”
“I’ll never be consistent.”
“I’m not a leader.”
“If people really knew me, they wouldn’t respect me.”
“Your beliefs act like a ceiling—you’ll never go higher than what you believe is possible for you.”
—Nick Surface
Where Limiting Beliefs Come From
Garrett and Nick break down how these beliefs get formed:
Childhood wounds
Repeated failure
Trauma or rejection
Cultural lies
Sin and shame
These moments shape your self-perception—especially if you don’t filter them through God’s truth.
“You can’t trust your experience more than you trust God’s Word.”
—Garrett Unclebach
How to Break Through Limiting Beliefs
Step 1: Identify the Lie
Ask yourself:
Where do I feel stuck?
What identity statement is driving that behavior?
Once you find the belief, you can trace the fruit back to the root.
Example:
Behavior: Procrastination
Belief: “I’ll probably fail anyway, so what’s the point?”
Step 2: Replace It with Truth
You don’t overcome a lie by ignoring it. You overcome it by declaring something stronger: God’s Word.
“You need a louder voice in your life than the voice of doubt.”
—Nick Surface
Find a truth that directly contradicts the lie. Speak it out. Write it down. Repeat it until it becomes default.
Step 3: Build New Habits that Match the Truth
Once you’ve aligned your beliefs, take action that supports the new identity.
If you believe you’re a disciplined man, act like it. If you believe you’re a leader, start leading—even if it’s small.
“Faith without action is dead. You don’t just believe differently—you live differently.”
—Garrett Unclebach
The Identity Shift: From Limitation to Freedom
Here’s what happens when you begin living from a renewed identity:
✅ You take action without fear
✅ You show up with clarity and conviction
✅ You stop striving for approval—you lead from sonship
✅ You walk in obedience, not insecurity
Practical Action Plan: Break the Limitation of Identity
✅ Write Down the Lies – What’s one limiting belief you’ve carried for years?
✅ Find the Truth – What does God’s Word say instead? (e.g., 2 Timothy 1:7, Romans 8:1, Ephesians 2:10)
✅ Declare It Daily – Speak truth over yourself every morning
✅ Take One Identity-Based Action – Do something today that proves the lie wrong
✅ Surround Yourself with Truth-Tellers – Get in a room with men who see who you really are
Final Thought: You Are Not Who You Used to Be
God didn’t create you to live under false labels. He created you to lead, love, build, and influence from a place of confidence and clarity.
“The only limits that matter are the ones you believe. Change the belief—change your life.”
—Garrett Unclebach
You’re not broken. You’re not average. You’re not disqualified.
You are a son of God. You are called. You are free.
Now live like it.
