Fear: The Silent Killer of Your Potential (And How to Eliminate It)

Fear.
It’s the number one limiter of your life, your potential, and your purpose. And unless you confront it, understand it, and eliminate it, fear will run your life in ways you’re not even aware of.

At The Impossible Life Podcast, we don’t just talk about mindset—we give you the strategies to overcome the biggest obstacles standing in your way. Fear is at the top of that list. In fact, we’re devoting an entire three-part podcast series to it because this is the work that will change everything for you.

This article is part one: Know Your Fear.

Why You Need to Deal with Fear—Now

Fear isn’t always obvious. It hides behind your hesitation. It shows up in your excuses. It wears the mask of caution, concern, or “being realistic.” But here’s the truth:
👉 If you feel limited in your life, your potential, or your purpose…
👉 If you know you’re capable of more, but you’re not seeing it play out…
👉 If there’s an area where you just feel stuck…
Fear is there.

And it’s stealing from you.

The goal of this article? To help you recognize where fear is operating in your life so you can rip it out and take back control.

Fear Is the Silent Killer of Potential

In 2020, 52.1 million U.S. adults reported experiencing mental illness. That’s one in five.
The common denominator? Fear.

COVID-19 may have been a global pandemic, but fear was the true disease. Fear of illness. Fear of the unknown. Fear of losing control.
Businesses were shut down. People were fighting over toilet paper. Death counters ran 24/7 on news channels.
Fear was broadcast on every frequency.

But here’s the thing: Fear limits your life whether there’s a pandemic or not. It’s always lurking—until you get intentional about eliminating it.

What Fear Really Is (And What It’s Not)

Most people don’t even know what fear actually is. We’re not talking about healthy caution or wisdom—that’s respect. You respect a grizzly bear, so you don’t walk up and try to high-five it. But you’re not lying awake at night terrified a bear will break into your house.

Fear is different.
Here’s the Noah Webster 1828 definition:
“Fear: A painful apprehension of impending harm.”
👉 It’s painful.
👉 It’s about something that hasn’t happened.
👉 It’s an imagined future you dread.

If you’re imagining a bad future and spending time thinking about it? That’s fear.
Whether it’s worrying about your marriage failing, your business crashing, or running out of money—those negative imagined futures are fear.
And fear steals your peace, your power, and your performance.

How Fear Hijacks Your Mind and Body

Fear triggers your brain’s amygdala, which controls survival mode—fight or flight. This is fine if you’re literally facing a life-or-death situation. But most of the time, your fear is irrational.
Your amygdala doesn’t care. It hijacks your brain anyway.

When that happens:

  • Logical thinking shuts down

  • Your body floods with adrenaline

  • You lose fine motor control

  • Your performance tanks
And you’re left reacting instead of responding.

In the Navy SEALs, Garrett was trained to override this biological response. Why? Because survival mode isn’t enough. To win, you need calm, control, and clear thinking.
You need the same skills if you want to overcome fear in your life.

The Top 3 Categories Where Fear Shows Up

You can categorize almost every fear into one of these three areas:

1. Life and Death

  • Fear of illness

  • Fear of injury

  • Fear of pain

  • Fear of losing a loved one
This is primal. But most of the time, it’s imagined—not real.

2. Resources

  • Fear of not having enough money

  • Fear of financial collapse

  • Fear of scarcity
This fear steals your peace and keeps you stuck in survival mode, making decisions from lack instead of vision.

3. Meaning and Purpose

  • Fear of not being enough

  • Fear of failure

  • Fear of rejection

  • Fear of insignificance
These are the fears that breed insecurity, imposter syndrome, and rob you of walking in your purpose.

Why You Need to Know Your Fear

The first step to eliminating fear is knowing it’s there.
You can’t fight what you don’t see.
Most people are so used to living with fear they think it’s normal. It’s not.

Here’s a truth bomb from Garrett Uncle Buck:

“Peace comes not from knowing what will happen, but from knowing what you will do.”
If your peace is shaken, it’s because your faith is in the wrong place. Fear creeps in when your faith is in yourself, your circumstances, or things you can’t control.
Peace comes from faith in God and knowing who you are.

The Cost of Living with Fear

Fear is expensive.

  • It costs you peace

  • It costs you potential

  • It limits your purpose

  • It makes you small
Fear doesn’t just keep you safe. It keeps you stuck.

You may be successful despite fear. But how much better would you be if you removed it entirely?

Take Action: Identify Your Fear Today

This isn’t just theory. This is action.
Start here:

Step 1: Identify Your Fear

Ask yourself:

  • What negative imagined future do I keep thinking about?

  • Where am I feeling stuck or limited?

  • What area of my life makes me feel anxious or unsettled?

Step 2: Write It Down

Get specific.
Describe the fear. Call it out.
Awareness is the first weapon against fear.

Step 3: Categorize It

Does it fall into:

  1. Life and Death?

  2. Resources?

  3. Meaning and Purpose?
Once you know where it lives, you can target it—and eliminate it.
